Weddings in Slovenia

Why Slovenia?
Slovenia is an absolutely beautiful country located in Central Europe, bordering Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary . It was part of former Yugoslavia, but was the first country to break free from Yugoslavia and only endured 10 days of fighting with Serbia. It is a peaceful nation of almost 2 million people consisting almost entirely of the Slovene population. Their language is Slovene, but almost everyone speaks English (particularly the younger generations).

Slovenia is part of the EU, and uses the Euro currency. For current exchange rates, please view Travelex .

Whilst there are many beautiful locations in Slovenia for couples to get married in, it’s very easy to see why the majority of couples choose to marry in Lake Bled.

Why Lake Bled?
The town of Bled is based around a beautiful lake with a small island in the middle. The island is home to a church with 99 steps leading up to it.
Bled Castle is situated on a cliff which overlooks Lake Bled.
Hotels, bars, restaurants, a golf course and a casino are a few of the amenities that surround the lake.

A typical wedding at Lake Bled would involve a civil ceremony at Bled Registry Office or Bled Castle, followed by a pletna boat ride for you and your wedding guests over to Bled Island. It’s a Slovene tradition of good luck that the groom carries his bride up the 99 steps on Bled Island (the bride should remain silent whilst being carried – easier said than done!) before ringing the Island bell and making a wish. It’s possible to have a religious ceremony in the church on the island, but the wedding isn’t legal without the civil ceremony taking place.
